Foaming Danby Kegerator

Mon Jan 26, 2009 6:50 am

Hey all, a neighbor friend of mine has a Danby kegerator and has had recurring problems with foaming, which I've tried to help him out with, to no avail. And I'm no newbie to setting up and balancing a draft system... Here's what we have to work with and what we've done so far:

- Danby fridge holds 40 degrees, more or less, so to get ~2.5 volumes of CO2 we have the regulator set at 11-12 psi.
- We have 5.5 - 6 feet of B3 3/16" tuibing from the coupler to the faucet.
- Using the standard sanke coupler that came with the kegerator.
- Using the standard shank that came with the kegerator.
- Switched to a Ventmatic forward-seal faucet.
- He normally has Yuengling Lager or Premium on tap.

- We have tried shutting off the gas and venting out the keg 2 or 3 times over the course of a few days to bleed down the dissolved CO2.
- We have tried adjusting the dispense pressure up to as high as about 14 psi and down as low as about 8.
- We have cleaned the shank, there's no gunk anywhere in the system.
- We don't see any signs of air bubble leakage anywhere into the system.

Each time we do a pour, be it the first glass or the 10th, it's at LEAST half foam, if not more. What's more, the foam is meringue-y and rocky. Wierdest, though, is that the stream of beer coming out of the faucet itself is bubbly, like the CO2 is breaking out. Our faucet connection to the shank is tight, and I can't see where any air is leaking in. I have had Yuengling on tap at my house before, and the stream of beer that comes out is sparkling clear.

I'm stumped. We've gotten every variable addressed, as far as I can see. I'm out of ideas, so can anyone see if I've missed something? TIA,
Jay

Is this a half height fridge, with the door drilled for the shank? If so, you are not getting any pressure drop from elevation. Usually, you are pumping the beer up the tower. If that is the case, the 5-6 feet that you have is certainly not enough.

Balancing a system is a bit of art as much as it is science. I did the calcs for my setup. As it turned out, I needed another 2 feet to really work out the foam issues. I would start with a longer beer line - and make sure that it's truely 3/16" inside diameter. Start long. You can always cut off some of the flow is not fast enough. You want to target something like 10 seconds for a pint or no more than 2oz. per sec.

It's got the tower. We have about 5.5 feet of line. I'm thinking maybe just go to like 8 feet and see what happens....that seems an awful lot though.

Have you checked the insides of the faucet? Could it not be opening completely when you pull on the handle? Is there maybe a rough edge (I want to say nucleation site) inside the faucet causing the co2 to break out?
Too much of a good thing....is a very good thing!

Thought if that. I took the ventmatic off of my systemand put it on his kegerator to see. Same deal. I think we'll try 12 feet of line and snip it until it works. i will post back with results.
