Dip tube length different for different kegs?

Wed Dec 17, 2008 11:05 am

Apart from the obvious dip tube length jokes.

Instead of the curved dip tubes, some of my kegs have the straight dip tubes (beverage side) - I think those are Firestone models instead of Cornelius?

Well some how I ended up using one of those straight diptubes in a keg that didn't need it, and now have a keg that I can't use because the spare dip tube won't fit.

But heres the thing, after finding out the curved dip tube wouldn't fit in problem keg I set it aside until the next time I cleaned a few more kegs.

But once I had those cleaned - even though a couple of those had straight diptubes, those still wouldn't fit into the problem keg - they were too long.

So apparently I have one keg that is shorter than all the rest and I never noticed.

Are the straight diptubes available in different lengths? If so where can I get the shorter version? I checked morebeer.com but they only have 1 size of straight bev diptube. I could cut a long one down to size, but I'd worry about being able to make a cut that could be cleaned and sanitized.

Also these are all ball lock kegs, I don't have parts for pin locks around, so I'm sure that isn't what happened.

I use one of these for cutting tubes. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... mber=92878

They are cheap to buy and are handy to have around for other purposes.

Thanks Bugeater

Does it work well on stainless? They only list softer metals like copper and aluminum on the site.

Do those hold up to cutting stainless steel? I seem to own several tubing cutters with chipped wheels. I wonder if they make a replacement with harder steel?

I've used a similar cutter to cut a dip tube. The key is not to get too aggressive with it. Go slow don't crank too hard and it will cut it. I've had mine for several year now and haven't chipped the cutter yet. The key is not too abuse it too much.

Lars has the key. Take it slow and easy. The faster you try to go the less satisfactory it will be. Just ask your wife and/or girlfriend. 8)
