Dry Hop With Pellets in Primary

Mon Nov 03, 2008 10:18 am

I have an all grain IPA in the primary right now and here's what I was considering doing to avoid dry hopping in the keg or secondary.
Comments welcome.

1. Wait unltil primary fermentation has finished (about 2 weeks)
2. Cold crash the carboy in my chest freezer (34F one or two days) to hopefully drop most of the yeast out.
3. Dry hop 2-3oz of pellets at about room temp (70F) for two weeks.
4. Keg and drink!
Consuming: Oat Porter, Dubbel, BDS
Waiting: Ahtanum Pale, Flanders Red

Looks fine with one change. No need to bring the beer back up to 70 while dry hopping. Once your beer is cold - leave it cold until it's gone.

+1 I dry hop at cold temps and it works just fine.

A wise man (Tasty) once suggested to dry hop in the primary at the very end of fermentation. The little bit of fermentation will help scrub any oxygen introduced from the pellets and the amount of aroma lost is negligable. Just add a bit more if you're concerned. Then crash it and transfer.
