How to run both ball and pin lock kegs

Mon Sep 29, 2008 11:30 am

I just inherited 3 new-to-me pin lock kegs. Now I have 4. All my beers are in ball lock kegs so far.

How should I support both kinds in my kegerator? T the gas and liquid lines? Or change over to threaded fittings and barbed threads? T's are easy and cheap, as all I have are barbed fittings so far, but I worry that they will make a "dead end" that will be hard to clean.

I also have to bring in the nuclear cleaner as three of these kegs look like they were left out back for a couple of years before I got them.

I have both sanke tap as well as ball lock kegs in my kegerator and I just use the threaded quick disconnects on the lines so I can mix and match as needed. It's an extra step to swap them out, but infinitely easier than trying to pull the connectors off the ends each time to make the change. The investment in a few fittings is much cheaper thant he cost of having to buy kegs, so you made out OK by the looks of it!

It would depend on how many kegs you have of each and where you would store your kegs in waiting.

One thing you could do is put together a jumper to go from Pin-out to Ball-out.

This would allow easy transfer between the two kegs if you get in a bind without the right connectors.

Basically using the pin locks as brite tanks before sending to a ball lock for serving.

I thought of that, using the pin locks essentially as carboys instead of using them as serving tanks. I needed some more carboys anyway.

I guess I just have to look into the prices of the various fittings.
