I like the sound of Mirror Pond - can't get it in OZ...

But,

Listening back to the show today to sort out some sort of similar recipe, I noticed the brewer say that they get 40 IBU from the first two hop additions, then double these additions for the last two.

Justin's recipe was 28g hop additions all the way through.

Any ideas why? Did I hear the interview/recipe correctly?

Sound like the hops were ok in the final clone. Any thoughts?

Something to keep in mind when you formulate your hop additions is that it is often best to work your way BACKWARDS towards the bittering addition so that the actual alpha levels in the hops you purchase can differ from the levels in the recipe, and you can account for the difference without changing the flavor and aroma profile of the finished beer.

For the most part, a relatively small difference in alpha levels can have very little to no effect on the level of aroma or flavor you get out of them, but it can greatly alter the bitterness extracted from them, particularly for the early additions. So, by working from the end of the boil with the same weights as the recipe, you can modify just the amount of the bittering addition, allowing you to end up with the same overall IBUs and same overall flavor/aroma profile, despite taking more or less bittering hops.

So, what I'm saying is that the "twice the amount" of late hops that was quoted may or may not hold true batch to batch. The recipe quoted on the show is a good example of this. If you recalc your bittering additions like this, then your beers can tend to end up much more consistent from batch to batch.

how does this sound for hop additions?

3/4oz @ 90 (7.8%AA)
3/4oz @ 30
1.5oz @ 5
1.5oz @ 0

That works out to be around 40 ibu's.
Although I havent had this beer myself, it does look quite hoppy compared to how people describe it! anybody else think this?

Also, is anyone else confused with the dry hopping? The brewer sounded like he didn't do it for every batch, if at all.

Guys,
I had a question regarding the recipe formulation: I thought that the brewer said that he used "Pale Malt" and Justin said he used 2-row... During the evaluation, JZ mentioned that he thought the MP had a little more malt background and suggested mixing the base malt ratio with Maris Otter or a slightly darker malt.

Thoughts on using Pale as the base malt instead of 2-Row? (I used Briess malts: 2-Row (5298); Pale (5301) )

Just listened to the show last night and I came here to say the same thing. I thought it was pretty clear that the brewer intended that you should double the amount of hops for the late additions.

Also, I had the Mirror Pond for the first time a few weeks ago, it is definitely super malty. I'd use a Pale Ale/MO/etc. for the entire base malt contribution.

When I had one I thought it was a very British pale ale with a very subtle hop flavor. Mine is a hop bomb. Of course, it's only been in the keg three weeks. I need to keep my hands off it for a few more weeks.
