Dry Hop warm or cold?

Sat Jul 12, 2014 6:19 am

Curious if there is a consensus on whether its best to dry hop warm or cold? In the past, I have always ramped up my temp with the fermentation.. so for an American ale, I'd start at 66 and ramp it up to 68 to 70. And then I dry hop at that temp for x days. Is anyone dropping their temp when dry hopping?

Thanks in advance!

At a 4 degree difference, probably not much of a difference either way. The way I do it is just like you where I drop in the dry hops after a slight temp increase and fermentation has completely ceased. Then after a couple of days I start to drop the temps a few degrees at a time to get the hops to slowly fall through suspension and settle at the bottom of the fermenter for racking 5-7 days later. If the hops are still floating at the top of the beer, they didn't do their complete job.

I too typically dry hop at least in the 64-68 F range and get good results with this method. Lately though I have been reading some posts on various blog sites of people dry hopping cold (40F or so) and also reporting good results.
