Rinsing Yeast - Pitching to next beer (Direct or Starter)

Fri Nov 02, 2012 5:11 pm

I was wonder when you rinse yeast and have it in the boiled water, before you pitch the yeast do you create a starter again or can you just pitch it again. I am planning on harvesting the yeast and pitching with in the same week. I will be brewing a very similar beer to the one I am going to be harvesting the yeast from. The current beer will be around 5% ABV. I would love to hear your input on this topic.

I would definitely do a new starter.

I just saw this over on HBT. It shows how to harvest before brewing. I've done this method many times and it saves the hassle of washing the yeast.

That is a great idea and easy to do. That is why I love brew forums. Truly funny how simple a solution that is and I have never thought of it (of course.... ) and never even heard of it either. Thanks for the link!

When you're rinsing the yeast you're using cold water to help it floc & separate. Aside from temp shock, they're going to be in a suspended state of activity. Always do a starter after rinsing to help wake them up & boost cell count. I'm pretty picky when I do it, so the yeast sample I collect at the end of rinsing is very small, but very healthy. I'd rather do a starter to make my selected cells grow as opposed to just taking a larger sample where the cells aren't going to be as good or consistent.
