Would there be any negative drawbacks from splitting a 10 gallon batch into 2 separate carboys for fermentation. I'm looking to brew with a neighbor and figured we might split the batch - we each get 5.

Nope, nothing negative! In fact, splitting batches gives you the opportunity to play around with different yeast strains.

Well .... the quite obvious negative is that YOU only end up with 5 gallons.

Split batches are great. They really help you learn about brewing in a controlled setting. Different yeast has already been mentioned, but other possibilities are different fermentation temps, different dry hopping, different finishing such as oak, etc. Go for it.
