Smells like ass?

Thu Mar 14, 2013 5:13 pm

So, this is my first experience using WL cream ale yeast and after 2 weeks in primary it's starting to smell like ass. Is this normal for this strain? Very slow flocculation too though it started quickly.

I've never used that strain but its well known that
sulphur (rotten egg/farty) smells are common with cold fermenting strains.

From the White Labs site:

WLP080 Cream Ale Yeast Blend
This is a blend of ale and lager yeast strains. The strains work together to create a clean, crisp, light American lager style ale. A pleasing estery aroma may be perceived from the ale yeast contribution. Hop flavors and bitterness are slightly subdued. Slight sulfur will be produced during fermentation, from the lager yeast.

I know you're asking for someone else's actual experience, and you're probably familiar with this description, but judging from this description, that smell is normal. Are you brewing the wort for the microbrewery? If you are, let us know how it comes out.

I forgot about the sulfur, and honestly I've never experienced this much of it in any other strain. But, now that I know, I'll just have to put up with the ass smell. Thanks guys!

Just be sure to give it an extra week for the sulfur aroma to dissipate as the CO2 scrubs it out of the beer.

I am having ass issues also. It has been kegged for 14 days now and it still smells like ass farts. Taste is like a Heineken on steroids. It is not as bad as a lager, but it is still there. It really brought out the grains in this a Blonde Ale, but I won't buy it again.
