Testing Our Keg Fermenters (Video)

Tue Jun 05, 2012 9:35 am

We ordered some keg fermenter kits so we could get away from plastic buckets wherever possible. Decided it was best to throw some wine kits in there to give them a maiden voyage. After a few modifications, they’re working great. The thing we wanted to do the most was to be able to push beer without having to use a manual siphon. A quick bit of welding and a fitting allowed us to push product under nitrogen or co2 pressure.

Dig it, but why not just use an auto siphon? It seems a bit to unnecessary for me. A standard sankey keg works great as a fermenter as long as you remove the ring and ball. Fill like normal and put a carboy cap on the top with an airlock... But i guess its not as fancy or cool looking.

This setup would allow for an easy oxygen-free transfer. To me that is the most compelling reason to avoid the auto siphon.

And less chance of infection. But whatever. It's stainless, it's expensive and it's awesome. What other reason do we need?

Very nice . I've been using the same type of setup except I had some 4 inch sanitary fittings installed so I can fit my arm into the fermenter . I have the fortune of working with welders that specialize in sanitary welding .
