Smack Pack Nutrient

Has anybody ever not broken the nutrient packet in a Wyeast package then just pitched it into the wort with the yeast?

I had that great idea last week, but am wondering now if its a good idea.

You would still have to break/puncture the nutrient packet to add it with the yeast to the beer. So why not do it inside of the yeast pouch where it is safe from infection? Besides the nutrient pouch really just helps the yeast to "wake up" a bit so you know there are still some viable in the pouch.

You don't need to break the nutrient pack, but why wouldn't you? If you're not doing a starter, why not give the yeast a good wake up and nutrient boost before fermentation?

I actually thought they had been punctured because the packets were expanding like they do after you break the nutrient packet. When I went to pitch they were still hanging out in their little bubble so i cut the nutrient packets and pitched it in the carboy with the yeast.
