Irish Moss questions

Wed May 17, 2006 8:36 am

Hey guys,
I was listening to the finings archive show and had a few questions about using irish moss.

- How much should I use for 5 gallons of beer (I'm doing a full wort boil).
- When do I add it?
- Why is worfloc so much better than Irish moss. (I start hydrating my irish moss at the start of my brew day).

It seems like I had another but it must of dribbled out my ear :?

I have not listened ot that show yet (for shame) however, for Irish moss powder or flakes, the packages I have say to use 1/2tsp with 15min left in the boil.

These days I use Whirlfloc tablets exclusively because:
1 - They don't need to be rehydrated, though I never rehydrated the others either.
2 - Tablets are simple - 1 for each 5gal wth 15min left in the boil.
3 - Tablets dissolve on their own, chuck 'em in and forget it; powder clumps easily and needs to be mixed into the wort well.

Just my opinion..

Sincerely,

I should clarify my 3rd question.

What makes Whirlfloc better than Irish Moss from a performance perspective. I totally understand the convience factor.

BTW I typically use 1 - 1.5 tsp of flaked kind of Irish Moss at ~20 min.

i've used both and aside from the ease of use, i haven't seen any difference in the final clarity.

So here is what I do in my process.

When I start to boil I take my 1tsp of Irish Moss and put in in a couple of ounces of warm water. Then about 20-15 minutes from the end of the boil I just dump it in.

It seems to work pretty good.
