A new brewer on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico

Sat May 03, 2008 12:43 pm

Gulfport, MS - eastern edge of the eye of Katrina. No decent restaurants left, all the classic homes blown to Hell, people stressed, so busy trying to get a life back that the search eclipses the need for quality of life. Brewing beer, even for a guy who hasn't been once around the brewer's track, gives me a point of reference and something for the future.

Close to Kiln, MS, in Hancock County, where the Lazy Magnolia Brewery makes an award-winning Southern Pecan that actually uses pecans in the brewing. They've only been distributing this in bottles for less than a year, but you'll certainly see it in the future.

A chocolate porter already long drunk, a Saint Paul Porter just hitting two months in the cooler, a London Nut Brown six weeks old (one in hand at this moment). A Biere de Garde in 2nd fermenter, and a mead of dewberries and rosemary in primary, and a Scottish 60 shilling ale (extract) on the shelf.

People of Louisiana background know that music, sex, alcohol, and food are the four basic needs of life, even if some will argue the order. Take any three together and you have the definition of a party. I fish for food, make beer because I enjoy the challenge of vying for control of the complexities, have plenty of music on hand, and like "Everyman", keep on the chase for the remaining needed basic of life.

Very likely that I share these same likes with the rest of you.

Give a man a fish and feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, and there will be 10 boats playing loud music and tossing beer cans in your favorite spot next trip.

Welcome to the forum! I spent some time down in that area many years ago, but the last time I was actually in Gulfport was right after Hurricane Camille back in 1969. The place was pretty well destroyed then. It really sucks getting hit twice like that.

Anyway, sounds like you are brewing some good stuff there. Please join us in the chat room on Sunday night and meet the rest of us short bus types.

Cheers, Denny.

Welcome to the forum.

I haven't made it down to that part of the country yet. A good friend of mine just got back from New Orleans and he echoed your sentiments as they continue rebuilding.

Salut!

The Pecan beer sounds great. I will watch for it.

Thanks for the reminder that life is still very hard in your area. It seems so long ago to people in other areas of the county.

We got hit hard in Orlando with all the hurricanes in 2004, but it was like a misquote bite compared to your situation.

Brewing is a great way to relax, especially while listening and laughing along with a BN archive show.

Welcome fellow Gulf Coaster
I'm not too far from you, and my mother-in-law lives in Hattiesburg so we go to Miss. pretty often.
Lazy Magnolia has some great beer, I'm hoping the next time we pass through Kiln I can get a corney filled.

Right on....another Gulf Coaster. There are a few of us brewers in S. Ms. but nothing like a LHBS or club, so we all just kinda wander around. Anyway, I'm over here between Vancleave and Latimer.

Drop me a PM sometime.

Welcome to the BN.
