It is a royal pain in the ass to NOT use one when you are pumping, but it can be done with some difficulty.

Get one if you can find/make a good inexpensive one.

[edit]
Tim-

A grant is a little brew pot that sits between the pumping source and the pumping target (like the mash tun or the brew pot). You typically gravity feed into the grant, then pump out of it either back into the mashtun or into the boil kettle.

It's job is to keep a vacuum from forming in your source vessel, whether that's pumping out of the mash tun (can you say cement?) or clogging up your filter/false bottom/hop stopper type thingy (when pumping from the boil pot).

Alright, Thanks that helps.

I think I need to look into something like that. I was of the mind that you could just cut back on the flow with the ball valve. But that idea seems much smoother.

Thanks,

Wal-Mart has nice stainless containers that look like they'd work great.

I like to keep my brewing pain-in-the-ass free... so I guess I will employ one. Thanks for the advice all!

Well, seeing how I am stealing every idea Push Eject seems to have for his brewstand... I would imagine I am going to have one like his!

I am going to add a shelf for the grant under my mash tun that will slide out when needed and slide back when done.

I suppose if I add a false bottom to it I can use it as a hopback also...
