Brett - separate equipment needed?

Wed Nov 03, 2010 7:21 am

Thinking a trying some Brett. Once I do, is my equipment from starter flask, to carboy, to keg now deemed "brett" only equipment? Or will good PBW cleaning and StarSan sanitizing work to put the equipment back in normal rotation?

I think all glass and stainless can be cleaned especially with high temp PBW or steam (autoclave). All plastic, including hard plastic and things that are hard to take apart/clean I would say is brett only.

That being said...i'm sure some people will say don't cross the streams on any equipment, but if you trust your cleaning ability go for it. You would probably find out pretty quick if something you used still had brett.

I use separate hoses and plastic etc, but I use the same kegs. I don't know why but I feel just fine using all the same gaskets on the kegs, I take them apart every time and all that. I try to keep certain kegs just for funk and beers that wouldn't taste bad if they developed a little brett, but I'm not to stringent about that. I feel like as long as the gaskets look clean and don't have dings in them, it's gonna be fine (you could heat sanitize the gaskets if you wanted to though, I have before). But I know some pro brewers (where it would be a bigger problem for that brett to spread) that would completely dissasemble their keg and only use those gaskets for funk beers.

I use separate autosiphon/tubing/racking cane, bottle filler, bottle bucket, plastic primary buckets (if you use them), stoppers, airlocks, kegs and even taps. Basically anything that will come in contact with the wild yeast and bacteria where it can hide.

I use the same boil kettle and starter flasks/jugs since those can be cleaned well with PBW and star san and do not have nooks or crannies that brett can hide in. Just be smart about your process and you will NOT have an issue. I have been brewing wild beers (both brett and bacteria) for 3 years constantly with no contamination of my normal brews.

I just finished racking my bam biere clone to a 2nd keg. I lost track of which keg and tubing I used and have reused everything. I clean and sanitize like a mad man, so it'll be interesting. I hope I don't end up with a sour oatmeal stout.

I have a pin lock keg that was never used, so I decided to make that my brett keg.
