First time harvesting yeast from Oberon bottles, issues?

Thu Jul 01, 2010 6:24 am

I harvested 3 bottles worth of Oberon yeast on Monday (let settle, gently poured bottle out, saved last inch, swirled, dumped), pitched into a 1.030'ish starter with a pinch of yeast nutrients, about 900 ml's, it's been on a stir plate since Monday and nothing...nada. No activity. Should I be worried yet?

no I would not worry yet....there is so little yeast to start with it can take some time to get them going what temp do you have it at..maybe raise it up a little..

Room temp, so likely 70-75 degrees lately.

When I harvested yeast from 3 bottles of two-hearted ale, it took about 3-4 days before I saw any activity..I didn't use a stir plate though...

In the future you may want to start by culturing a smaller amount. Trying reusing a sanitized white labs vial as your first step get that going, then pitch to a liter starter.

ok...after about 5 days, looks like it took off and finished quick. The pic below is my 2L flask that i had about 850-900 ML's of wort in. I put it in the fridge over 24 hours ago. I expected a lot more separation and caking at the bottom, but it's not. This has not been disturbed or shaken up.

Does this look right? I'm doubtful I could even decant this to kick it into the step up starter.

Looks fine to me. Give it a sniff, if you don't detect anything "off" pitch that bad boy!

I'm pretty sure bells uses anchor ale / wyeast american ale ii (1272?). Seems a lot easier than culturing.
