Dry hops in primary?

Mon Jan 18, 2010 2:01 pm

My recipe calls for dry hopping at 8 days (when fermentation has stopped), taking the beer to a secondary and dry hopping while adding geletin finings. I really don't have a secondary to put this in. Is it OK to just stir in the finings and add the dry hops in the primary. Then, at bottle, siphon off. Will I get crud from the dry hopping on bottle day? Is there a trick to puttting a filter on the auto-siphon on the intake side to prevent gunk from going into the bottling bucket?
Thanks

I always dry hop in primary, you should be just fine. If you are able to, crash cool it a day or two before bottling and this will cause most of the solids to drop to the bottom of the carboy. So, as long as you don't put your autosiphon all the way to the bottom you shouldn't have any clogging issues.

Crash cool? Cool it down to what temp? How do I best go about doing that for a bucket?
Thanks!

Put it in a fridge or a cold place. You can chill it down to 30F or so without it freezing. Even if you can't get it that cold 40F or 50F will still help out with getting the solids to drop.
