use a cleaner first then star san it... I think that would be better

If I soak bottles in my unsoftened well water with bleach for more than a day they get that gritty white residue. A quick rinse in full strength white vinegar takes it right off. don't even need a soak. for some reason, the ion-exchange softened water doesn't do this nearly as much.

Although I've not tried it, I bet star san would work just as well, but I would not save the star san after using it for this.

dannyw - that is exactly what i am soaking in...unsoftened well water. it is all becoming clear now....i'll get some pbw to go along with the miracle chemical (star san) and i should be complete! now if i can just make my beer better......
