when I lived in the Lower Area the BJs located in Woodland Hills was what saved the day. I was there in 2006. the brewery was brewing the beer served on site. I remember a few things about being there. the Beer Appreciation dinners were always a good time. I got to attend 3 or 4 of them. while I was there it was stoopid hot weather so big and or hoppy wasn't what I wanted. that made up for the lack of a great IPA. the bar served more shots, girl drinks and Bud Lite compared to their own beer. which was not a surprise. but what was a surprise was meeting Maltese Falcon members randomly.

I have notes that the beer was good beer but not great beer. maybe it was the local water which always smelled like chemicals.

today BJ's is a destination the same way that Russian River or Triple Rock are destinations. it's takes a train and a walk through the mall to get to BJs, BART to Bezerkly to 3Rock or convincing somebody with a car to take me North to RR. it's much easier to drink locally at 21a or Magnolia and or walk to Toronado from my flat.

I was bummed to see that the BJ's in Portland Oregon doesn't brew on premise anymore. They used to, up to a couple of years ago. In fact the owner of Upright Brewing, who I am interning for now, used to brew there and he said they made some really good beer. I think that it's a shame that this beer is now being brewed in Reno Nevada at a centralized location. There is probably a nice brewing system up there, not even being used. Yo Mufassa, hire me and I'll get the system running again! I'll work for dirt!

I have only been to 2 Gordon Biersch brewpubs and both of them brewed on site. The beer is really fantastic. I think you can learn a lot about brewing great lagers by drinking their beers. They really have the freshness factor and they know how to get great melanoidin development.

As far as I know, all the Gordon Biersch locations brew their own, with the exception of airport locations (duh!). The control panel at the brewery in San Francisco is a stunning example of German engineering. Makes good beer, too!

As for BJ's, beer ain't bad but I can't keep them straight from Rock Bottom a lot of the time. "Uh, you know, the BJ's or Rock Bottom or whatever by that mall...beer's pretty good."

The Rock Bottom Brewery that I go to in Indy, brews on site. Great beer and GREAT food. I highly recommend it to friends all the time. I go to the one on 86th street. They seem to sell out of their Kolsch way too fast! have not been to the one downtown Indy, but I would.

I know that in Texas, the law prohibits them from brewing on premise. I thought Mufasa had said that several did. Good question for tonight.

Until tonight, I would have agreed with the point completely. I have always found that chain brewpubs such as BJ's, Rock Bottom, GB and Pyramid tend to focus on consistency and sales over quality or creativity. Mufasa even admitted, on one of the older shows, that consistency is key for BJ's. However, tonight I took the family to check out the new BJ's in Concord, CA. I was surprised to find a fantastic line of guest taps, including many from our small, local breweries. I enjoyed some great IPAs from Drakes and Marin Brewing. The family was happy because BJ's has a great menu, and I was happy to enjoy some great local craft beers.
