poor man's yeast crash

Thu May 11, 2006 4:57 pm

I have never crashed yeast prior to bottling and would like to try. However I do not have a fridge to bring a full 5G carboy down to ~30oF. My ider for a solution is a large ice bath. Has anyone used this approach and how much ice is needed to keep 5G cold for 2 days? My hunch is that 5 bags should do the trick.

Also, has anyone baked their bottles as means of serilization without using sanitizers? I know that having some cornys and CO2 is ideal, but I am not set up for that yet. Currently, I clean with H2O or PBW, rinse well, and then seal the bottles with a single sheet of foil and then bake the bottles at 300oF for 30min or so. This should kill most spores, but I would love to hear a second opnion.

I don't know how much ice you will need, but adding salt to the ice bath should bring the temp down even more.

As for baking the bottles take a look here....

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

Travis,

Thank you sir. The carboy is going into a nice NaCl ice bath this evening to drop some Cal Ale yeast. As for the bottles, a little bit of homework on my part would have gone a long way.
