Beer: Sharp Edge heading Downtown

Great news for Downtowners who love beer: The Sharp Edge is going to open a location there.
The small local chain (sharpedgebeer.com), which started in East Liberty/Friendship and now includes Edges in Crafton, Sewickley and Peters, aims to open a Sharp Edge Bistro at 922 Penn Ave., Downtown.
Work started early this month on the space, which for a long time hasn't been much more than display windows, said Sharp Edge owner Jeff Walewski after leaving the construction site Friday.
He said it will be very much like Sewickley's Bistro: Same black granite bar top and other decor, 20 Belgian brews -- the Edge signature -- on tap, plus 10 others, and a Bistro menu featuring specialties such as frites.
They're aiming for a June opening for the space, which initially will seat 136. "Down the road," he said, they'll open a second floor for seating about 50 for private dining and meetings.
I'm still stuck on the 30 drafts.
Fat Head's Head Hunter IPA, brewed at the Ohio Fat Head's by Matt Cole, breezed through all the brackets to win the Brewing News' National IPA Championship. India pale ales from around the country went head to head in blind tastings at events in several cities and were judged by brewers; readers could enter their picks for a chance to win a case of the winning brew. Head Hunter bested 128 other IPAs, including, in the final "Game 127," Firestone Walker Brewing's Union Jack. That's some March badness, Mr. Cole. More at brewingnews.com/nipac.
The annual Fire Chief Ale festivities continue, through April 4, at Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery at The Waterfront in Homestead, honoring firefighters while benefiting the Birmingham Trauma and Burn Center at UPMC Mercy. From 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday there's a "Fire Fighter Challenge" competition. At 7 p.m. Tuesday there's a karaoke contest next door at Sing Sing. And you can always try the ale before it runs out.
From 7 to 9 p.m. tonight, Shadyside's Harris Grill hosts a free "mini beer dinner" appetizer tasting with samples of and specials on several brews from Founders Brewing Co. of Grand Rapids, Mich. And from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at most area Mad Mex locations (4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Oakland and 7 to 9 p.m. in Robinson), they'll be celebrating Victory -- Victory Brewing Co. -- with specials and swag.
