that is exactly how we are in the lead. Last year I not only took the exam, but a couple of experienced judges (that are actually good) put on a series of classes where we went over the topics of the exam and then tasted commercial examples, common flaws in homebrew, and we did the "doctoring beers" kit from the BJCP.
Not only is it good to know what you are tasteing....the most important part is to know where off flavors come from in your brewing process. That way you can correct or avoid potential fuck-ups.
