Re: NY State HomeBrewer of the Year

I am in total shock right now. I kicked ass in the NYS Fair comp!!! :pop

3 of my 4 beers placed. All from BCS, thank you Jamil.

My Mild English Brown took 1st in category and Best of Show (they were my last bottles from that batch, my very first all-grain). I had brewed it using Jamil's Southern English Brown recipe. However, it had been criticized as being too roasty for a Southern in previous competitions, so I entered it as a Mild this time.

My Oatmeal Stout took third in category.

And the Hefeweizen took 1st in category and an Honorable Mention in the Best of Show. It was an extract batch that I made numerous mistakes with. I am glad that I took good notes on that one.

I am on an incredible high right now. It is only my third competition and I've only had one beer place in category in the past.

To top things off, my Brewstrong shirt and BN hoodie arrived in the mail today. Best day in a long time. :bnarmy:

Awesome job Trouble! Winning best of show with with a Mild is all balls out of the nutters if you ask me!
:nutters: :nutters: :nutters: :nutters: :nutters:

It beat our Mild and you beat one of our Hefes which I had pegged as "our" best chance at best of show. Goes to figure you can never tell what the judges think these days!

Thanks man. Being a relative noob at homebrewing, especially competitions, I am flabbergasted at my results.

Congrats on the HOTY award. :jnj

you guys had a hell of a year.

Big time congrats to IPISAY (great name BTW) and Trouble Brewing and not to steal the thunder of BBKF. Not sure what your realnames are, but way to bring it strong. Also to Brew Engineer for his famous brown and curses  to him. I guess that hernia did not slow you down. I entered a decent brown, but did not place thanks to you.

Now here is the "what the fuck" scenario. It looks like my IPA placed. The kicker is that a day after I sent in the submissions I brought some to the Sixpoint Brewery here in Brooklyn.
It was an all late addition Summit hop IPA, nice flavor and great aroma, but these notes where overshadowed some sort of infection that as time wore on got worse to the point where I poured a whole case down the drain. I blame it on when I dry hopped it.How embaraasing to presnt bad beer to a pro brewer that is bad. Talk a bout leaving with your tail between your legs. But some times paranoia can be a brewer's best friend.
Maybe the beer got switched in the cellar with one of BooBoo's?
By chance did anyone judge IPAs?
Brewin is weird and comps can even be weirder, no wonder I love this affliction.
But congratulations BN Army NY. :aaron

Wow, a lot of BN Army getting medals in this one! Who all is going to the awards on August 30th? If there's a chance of meeting up with some of the BN Army, I'll show up!

B.E. - I'll definitely try to make it. Where did you find out that the awards are on Aug 30th? I didn't see that on either the Salt City or NYS Fair websites?

It was in the rule packet. If you go to the salt city site, download the rules, and its about 4-5 pages in.

Fritz,

I was surprised too that out IPA did not place. It is only the second time an IPA that I was apart of did not place. (the last time the IPA was infected with homegrown hops). I have found that in the Northeast IPA's are hit and miss with judges. Some judges love that crystal sweetness of dogfish head or English Ipa's very few judges truly know what a West Coast IPA is all about. Anyhow, We (BBKF and I) will be kicking the rest of the IPA at Phish tomorrow. Sorry Fritz for dumping that "great beer".

IPAISAY is TOM and not "Mark". State fair results are wack!

Let's give a shout out to Brew Engineer for winning American Brown in the 09 Longshot! Sorry it is not moving on to the second round! BBKF/IPAISAY nill in longshot! Brew, If you private message me, I have a picture of your brown ale along a row of other beers for the best of show table at AWOG. Interesting picture!
