I grew up in Oakland and there are plenty of ways to stay safe. As long as you practice the same "downtown routine" that you would in any other large city, you'll be fine. .... Further, the truly bad parts of town aren't near the conference. Besides, the Oakland Police headquarters is about 3 blocks away.
From an AHA email today: "Be Safe: Oakland, like any urban center, has its share of good and not so good neighborhoods. The downtown area immediately around the conference is generally safe, but it is recommended to stay within two blocks of Broadway (the Marriott is at 1001 Broadway) in either direction. Use common sense, travel in groups (especially at night), or grab a cab."
If you are Saco and familiar with the area I'm sure you can go beyond the two block suggested limits mentioned by the AHA for walking at night especially if you are in a group. If not, they are suggesting you take a cab. I have a hunch at night time there will be plenty going on inside the hotel and it may not even be an issue. My wife lived and went to school in Oakland for a year or so in the early 1970's about 20 blocks away (near where Telegraph and Broadway meet) and had no incidents and used common sense.

s, but after 5 pm, I will be at the hotel until the next day.
