I picked this up today and will give you my thoughts on the beers when I drink them, but first some pics...

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

First up is James Madison Dark Wheat Ale.

This is a really nice beer. Very smooth breadiness with a bit of a peppery taste. Just a hint of smoke makes it a pretty well balanced. Just a bit of hops noticable.

I was going to look for this, this past weekend but didn't get the chance to. I havn't heard anything good about the Root Beer Brew. Most people from the More Beer forum said they couldn't finish it.

Next up is the George Washington Porter.

This claims to be brewed with Molasses and Licorice. And thats about all you can taste in this. There is some hops, but I don't really care for this one at all. Kinda makes me think of licking hot tar off a leather boot.

valorian,
The problem that I had with most of the beers in the SA Patriot Collection was that the spice usage seemed really strong across the board. I thought the dark wheat was the best one out of the four. I think it was enjoyable to have the set of beers for the quasi-historical interest, but I'm not sure I'd pick up another package. By the way, Lufah, thanks for your take on these beers. Looking forward to your take on the other two beers.

Sounds historically accurate. From what I've read his brews were almost all molasses, a little corn and tasted like shit.

I went ahead and did the last two tonight. I couldn't finish either one of them. First is the Root Beer. Smelled like bottle caps candy tasted like it a bit also. Tasted really sweet and bad. Whatever possessed people to brew beer with molasses? Short story awful.

Next is the traditional ginger honey ale. Another horrible beer. This made me think of lemon cough syrup with a corn aftertaste. Blughk.

Finally something I can drink.....Gooose Island IPA

From what I've read, these beer are historically accurate. If they are, I don't know how people back then drank them if they're so bad tasting.
