Wanna Make a Stanky Pale Ale

I've been wanting to do a pale ale for an upcoming trip back home to serve to all the folk who might not necessarily wanna drink my stouts or browns, and I think I wanna do more an American style. Here's the thing, I wanna do a pale that smells, as the brewcasters call it, "dank." I want it to be hoppy, but not overly so, and have a distinct "I just opened a bag of expensive cousin" smell. What I was planning to do was just take the BCS American Pale and do it with different hops, but I was really curious which hops it is that give a beer that dank flavor and smell...

I'm probably going to be doing this as a partial mash recipe, so any tips you have for me there are welcome as well...

dry hop with an 1-1.5 ounces of columbus...it will get you were you want to go! an ounce should do it....

I shoulda known googling this was going to pull up a shitload of threads...and a lot of priceless banter about the subject. Seriously, some people get offended when you ask this stuff.

So yeah, it looks like I'm using columbus, but I was thinking of dryhopping with a mix of columbus and simcoe....I've heard great things about both of those, whattaya think?

Green Flash WC IPA uses the CTZ and Simcoe and its excellent. 50:50 blend of those two hops. Very good IPA. You could probably scale down the CYBI recipe to a 1.050ish beer and have a nice one.

The combination will create a more complex aroma. It will still be very dank in aroma with a little bit of onion hoppy goodness. Go 75/25 if you want it to lean towards columbus.

+1. Simcoe is oniony/catty. If you are going to go that way, go lighter on the simcoe, like 75/25 instead of 50/50.

Not everyone gets the "catty" characteristics from Simcoe, especially people that, well, don't own cats. Annecdotally, I've found that women tend to pick out that flavor/aroma more often than men when Simcoe's used.

But if you want your APA to smell like bong resin and tangerines, throw some Summit in the late hop additions and dry hop mix.

Be careful with Summit, I know a lot of people that don't care for that hop. Bong resin is a good descriptor, does not smell like fresh green. I am not saying SacoDeToro is wrong just letting you know summit is distinct and can overpower. Make sure you like the way it smells before you use it, that goes with all varieties.
