I've never tasted Pliny The Elder, so the recipe was the first thing I turned to when I got my Zymurgy yesterday. Vinny Cilurizo made a point of saying to keep the crystal to a minimum and mash low to keep the beer dry and the hops in the forefront. Yet he also uses Carapils to add body. It's this contradictory to what he's saying? Couldn't I mash a degree higher instead? I'd like a concensus opinion on this.

Carapils will add flavor and body but won't add perceived sweetness like cystal malt will. Mashing higher will give you body but will add unwanted sweetness to the recipe.

Thanks. I'd always been told that Carapils was redundant for all-grain brewing. I've never used it before. Evidently I've been misinformed.

Screw carapils. Most overused malt on the planet.

anyone know what the efficiency on that recipe is? When I put it into promash I am at almost 80% to get the og right

It says 80% in there somewhere. I remember reading it.
