I think that will help quite a bit. I would also work some black patent into your recipe.

I just brewed Jamil's Robust Porter for the second time and the recipe is fairly straightforward and has great complexity to it. I'm a big fan of the "K.I.S.S." method (in all things... :) ). Ditto on the black patent.
Primary: Surley Bender
2ndary: ESB and Black Forest Stout (which has formed a pellicle, guess I'll ride it out)

Bourbon Barrel Aged RIS
