Shiner Bock?

Any of you Texans remember Lone Star Bock? $3.99 a sixer at Randalls back in the 90's. Long gone, though.

I do indeed remember Lone Star Bock. In fact, thanks to my dad, who was a LS salesman, I have an old LS Bock mirror on the wall.

That's awesome. I'll bet he's got some cool stories.

I was like 18 or 19 when I was buying it, so that would be 94 / 95. I couldn't tell you anything about how it tasted, though. Ah, the days when I didn't know what hops were - just choke down whatever was around to achieve the desired mind state. Those were fun times. No my wife laughs at me when I say things like "flavor profile" or "mouthfeel."

Not that it's gods gift to beer when fresh, but it's still serviceable.

I feel the same way about Abita. I support them because breweries are kind of rare in Louisiana, and they're pretty cool people, but their idea of beer styles is odd. I can drink Jockamo and like it, regular Abita and Turbodog are drinkable, I'm not sure what Andygator is supposed to be (besides expensive!) and I have never cared for Purple Haze (raspberries!).

One of the guys in the club blames it on their water. Says it's too soft.

Short Story - I'm an experiment conductor. As it turns out, the Kroger next to the homebrew store had Shiner Bock in cans - with freshness dates. I grabbed a sixer of cans dated 01/20????/10 - so it was in a state the brewery meant to be drunk.

I also play in an indoor soccer league in Saturdays, and there's a little bar attached to the place. Shiner's on tap there and we just happened to be playing a game that ended in time to drink beer immediately after the game last night.

Conclusion:

My tastes have evolved.

From the keg - Not bad, really - better than I was expecting in fact. A perfectly servicable lager with nothing going on that makes you remember it in the end. I can't say it was anything other than a beer drunk from a pitcher that I didn't mind. I'll neither seek it out nor shun it.

From the can - pretty much the same, but somewhat under carbed.

Like I said - I'm not gonna run out and buy as much of this stuff as I can get my hands on, but still - there are worse things you can find to drink.

I said I would try Shiner again, so I did. My beer bud and I sampled it this eve. Here's the notes;

Shiner Bock review.

Bought a six from a fresh case delivered today (no guarantee of freshness). No date on package, just a lot number on bottles.

Poured down center of glass. Coase head that dissipated quickly (<1 min).

Very clear dark brown color.

Very light malt and hop (northern brewer?) aroma. Light bitterness and slight malt sweetness.

Very light body. Musty or stale taste on back of tongue. Watery. Fizzy.
