21A's Bitter American - What style category?

Hey,

I picked up the 21st Amendment's Bitter American beer kit from More Beer - great beer! However, I was curious if anyone else has brewed it before? I want to enter it in some up coming competitions, but I am a little confused with what style to enter it as? It doesn't have that "American Citrus" character that you usually need to stand up in the APA category, but it also doesn't have the "English Ester" character either which would handicap it in the English Pale Ale categories.

Thoughts?

Either way, I would recommend brewing the beer for sure - great beer to knock back several pints of.

Either as a pale mild (though I don't think it will do well with most judges) or a specialty beer.

It's one of my favorite kits and one I have made many times (7 batches in the past 8 months) changing small things each time so I can see how it effects the final product. It will also be my first all grain brew so I can see how that translates over. Almost there, just working on the finishing touches for the brewhouse plumbing before I dive in.

I can 't speak to the kit itself, but I would recommend submitting it to more than one category as well. I had a tweener beer too, that I was targeting as an APA with the recipe, but then I realized I only had english ale yeast to pitch. I submitted it to both APA and ESB categories, and both catagories feedback was "Solid beer, a little off style.." "more like an APA," or "More like an ESB".

I expected that, but it was nice to get some good feedback from even more judges in the same competition, on the same beer.
