Yeast/Trub clumping up in stir plate starter?

Wed Mar 07, 2007 4:42 am

I had an old smack pack of London ale yeast that I decided to get up and running. I believe it was maybe 1 month past expiration on the pack. For the first day on the stir plate it was fine, but after that I noticed what all I can describe as "curdled" trub/yeast churning around in my flask. Has anyone ever seen this? This can't be a good thing, I would think, however, I wouldnt' know what would cause it to clump up.

update:

I stopped the stir plate and let the stuff settle to see what happens. It went back to a powdery base at the bottom. It's just strange to see the stuff clump up in the whirlpool

I had a Ringwood a few weeks ago that looked like that when I poured it out of the smack pack. It looked the same after a couple days on the stir plate, just more of it, but it took right off once it was pitched. I haven't pulled a sample yet to know how well it attenuated.

That London yeast looks like cottage cheese. Perfectly normal. Brew on.

Yeah, if it's anything like the English Ale yeast (WLP002), it looks pretty clumpy. I haven't used the London yeast, but it sounds similar. It's fine.
