Mt malty pitching calc question

Fri Jan 19, 2007 7:01 pm

OK I'm looking at the calculator and there is on thing I can't understand. Lets say I am brewing a 1.075 IPA, I have 5.5 G, and will be using a stir plate. It tells me I need one vial. Is this in a 1L , 2L or 4L starter? Acording to the info in the starter portion of the sight a 2L is only capable of 200 B cells. For the 283 B cell needed what size wort starter do I need on my stir plate?

One other thing, with the stir plate how long do you use O2 for?

Thanks
Tim

Are we talking about a starter made shortly before brewing or are you letting it ferment out completely?

Check the rest of his site for more great info on this, BUT, the current thinking is that you will reach peak yeast growth after about 18hrs. on the stirplate. If you plan on pitching the whole thing into the batch then just start it about 18 - 24hrs before you plan to pitch. If you're going to decant the beer off it then you need more time and you need to crash it in the fridge.
