Bulk Hops

Wed Jan 03, 2007 8:45 pm

Been buying my base grain in bulk for about a year now, and am thinking of buy my hops in bulk. Looking at the NB magazine I just got today and did some math. Looks like I would just about get a free batch (hops wise) if I buy in bulk. What is the best way to store hop pellets and how long will they last?
My Irish Red receipe calls for 4 oz of EK Golding hops and I can see brewing 4 batches in years time but would the hops last that long?

Freeze them... the more airtight (and light proof the better)...
1 year is a good number

I keep mine in the freezer in the oxygen barrier bags that B3 sends them in. I rarely have them more than a few months, but plan to get a foodsaver or the like to seal them back up after each use to keep the oxygen out of there.

I buy about 4 pounds of hops every fall. I split them up into 4 ounce increments in those vacuum Foodsaver bags and stuff them into the freezer. They will keep for a year easy that way. I usually get my hops from Hops Direct. If you order a pound they will give you about a pound and a half (and only charge you for the pound). If you brew enough to use that many hops, you really save money on hops.

I recently got hops from Fresh hops. I went the foodsaver route too. It is also how I have been packaging my homegrown hops. Then of course to the freezer.
I see you are looking to buy pellets. But if you want some whole hops I highly reccomend Fresh Hops. My brewbuddy and I were very pleased with what we got and for a really great deal.

Same process here....cheap vacuum packer and chest freezer.
I bypass the light barrier bags, and just use good heavy duty foodsaver plastic. Theres no light in my freezer!
Soak Grain Rinse repeat

How do we make things so difficult
