Shelf Life of Grains and DME

Sun Dec 22, 2013 6:53 pm

Hey guys, sorry if this topic has been covered. I received a shitload of FREE grains and 50lbs that's right 50lbs of DME from a brewer that just stopped brewing. Im wondering if these grains/DME are still good. The grains are not milled and sealed in ziplock bags. They are probably around 8-9 yrs old some are dated 2004. The DME is in the original box and plastic wrap from muntons. Its pretty compact but I was able to scoop out, some of it is clumped together but breaks up freely. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

The grains are way, way, way too old. I dunno about the extract, but I'd bet would be too old as well.

Since it was free, a test batch would cost you much but time, a few hops, and some yeast. It would be interesting to see what your results were. Maybe you could even send it in to Dr. Homebrew to see what those guys think.

Sounds like a batch to brew to use for BJCP tasting exams...
