hey! first time posting, been lurking for awhile. sorry about spelling etc. swedish...

so, anybody tried brewing with nettles? reckon they will come soon as the snow is melting now.

did one batch last year but i was way too inexperienced to take proper notes. did come out really nice anyway for a third or fourth batch. got some props from a probrewer friend for the balance in flavors.

all i know is that i brewed a 10L batch with extrac, pale aleish about 5abv
10g amarillo @ 60min
200g fresh nettles @ 15min
10g amarillo @ 5min
did taste a bit like nettlesoup at first but after conditioning for about two weeks it was good!

i'll let u know what i'll do soon as i've picked them. any ideas or thoughts around this lovely plant would be nice :)
use proper gloves!!

skål!

With the exception of our rainy northwest, they're not as common in the states as they are in northern Europe, so I'm guessing there won't be a ton of brewers over here who have experience with them. I know I'm in that catagory, but I'd love to hear some more about the brew. And take some notes! :D

Welcome!!!

Local sourced ingredients, sounds fun! I haven't got that adventurous yet.

Lots of nettles in Iowa.

thanks guys!
hehe, we got them all over the place and since they're good for you no one can blame me for drinking "too much" beer, right ? :D

i'll keep notes and update!

been looking to use nettles for twenty plus years--they grow wild here anywhere you give them a chance. My question is there other chemicals in the nettles that would make one flunk a drug test?

i wouldn't think they be a problem, they're common used for food over here. don't pick em if they're close to roads with lots of traffic and stuff, they will pick up pollution. but guess that goes for any plant!
