LME 2 DME????????????

Fri Feb 22, 2013 12:57 pm

Hey everyone,

In my part of the world fresh LME is impossible to get.

But there is no short supply of DME.

So, if anyone has a good conversion chart that would be great!

Thanks in advance and brew on!

Its been a while but think this is what I did:
DME= 0.84* LME
LME=1.19 * DME

In Palmers book he says LME is about 20% water. So 4lb of DME is roughly 5lb of LME

My rule of thumb is 1 pound of LME is .75 DME. Conversely, 1.25# LME is 1# DME.

Daddy Biers, http://www.jessenewcomer.com/blog/archives/38, this is the first result of a google search. Pretty useful chart if it's correct. I'm assuming the numbers are in Lb's

That chart is assuming a particular extraction efficiency, which may or may not match yours (or the guy whose recipe you are converting.
Likewise, the actual values of how many sugars are in LME or DME are manufacturer specific.

Most often, 1 lb of LME dissolved in 1 gallon of water yields a wort of 1.036, or 36 gravity points per lb per gallon.
Most often, 1 lb of DME dissolved in 1 gallon of water yields a wort of 1.044 or 44 gravity points per lb per gallon.
You can find out from the manufacturer, though these will be close. (ie, maybe 1.035 for the LME or 1.046 for the DME). You simply replace that value into this formula:

LME needed = (DME PPPG)/(LME PPPG) x (Number of lbs of DME given in the recipe)
DME needed = (LME PPPG)/(DME PPPG) x (Number of lbe of LME given in the recipe)

therefore, if the numbers are 44 and 36:

So, to convert 6 lbs of DME in the recipe:
??? DME needed = (36/44) x 6 lbs of LME => 4.91 lbs of DME
??? LME needed = (44/36) x 6 lbs of DME => 7.33 lbs of DME

Hope this makes sense
