HopUnion Packaging

Thu Apr 26, 2012 2:00 pm

I was horrified that my LHBS had packs of HopUnion whole hops at room temperature rather than in a freezer/fridge. With their new packaging (is it nitrogen?), isn't cold storage necessary anymore?

Cheers...Mark

I'm pretty sure heat in general is detrimental to hops, nitrogen packaged or not. I'd pick refrigerated hops over non-refrigerated every time.

The number one enemy of hops is heat. Always keep your hops frozen.

I'm surprised you said that about Hopunion packaging. I've been to their facility and it looks like they have a great refer system for all of their hops. The line they make the nitrogen evacuated pouches is really cool and I think the only one like it in the industry.

I'm sure it's cool, but are they stable at room temperature? I'm used to the hops going straight to the freezer. Old habits die hard.

Not sure what you mean there... the OP was questioning whether the new packaging eliminated the need to keep hops cold, which I don't think it does. Hops should still be kept cold.

From Hop Union's site:
As with all of our products, quality is our top priority. Each of our home brew packages is carefully packed and sealed in a nitrogen flushed, light resistant, oxygen barrier N2 HopPackâ„¢ and then stored in a temperature controlled atmosphere to avoid heat related degradation. This packaging system ensures that every package of Hopunion hops is maintained in an ideal storage environment.
