East Coast Yeast

Tue Feb 21, 2012 9:18 am

I'm setting up my commercial brewery and I wanted to try something different and use a yeast nobody else uses so I ordered some ECY10 Newark Ale Yeast. I made up my pale ale recipe and 2 one gallon starters, it went from 1.056 to 1.018 in 5 days and it pretty much stopped there. I might not have grown the yeast up enough since I'm not used to their packaging.

I took a sample and it has a funk to it like a belgian strain, the beer tastes great and the yeast seems to have subdued the bitterness of the hops. I really like the flavor of the yeast but it is definitely not an american ale yeast, they might have mixed up their strains since ECY is better known for their bugs.

Edit: I just watched an interview with the guy from ECY and he said he knows a few people that have tried the ECY10 and the results have been "interesting"... That is pretty much my take on it also. :P

I guess I'm the only one that has tried this yeast?

I've got a beer fermenting with it right now, but it's my first one with it. Did you get this recently? I recall seeing a post from ECY saying that the ECY10 propagated and distributed in early December might have been a wit yeast.

I did get it in December so that is possible, I wonder if it is the Belgian wit strain.

Do you still have the original bottle? I think people were saying the dates were from November.

Do you have a saved culture of this yeast, or could put some in a vial for me? I've been waiting to order their wit yeast for an upcoming wit but haven't seen it available in a while
