Hm. My hops are in barrels (wine) too. I am definitely not an expert. The current "farming" program for me is:
1) Fertilize a couple/three times when shoots arise, and again during cone production
2) Water thoroughly, wait until soil is dry before watering again (the ol' stick a finger in the dirt test)
3) The bottom several feet of leaves will be cut off eventually to prevent mildew/bugs. For me, I've noticed the first few leaves tend to dry up and/or get chomped a bit by bugs. However, the vine keeps growing, middle and upper leaves look healthy, and hops are popping.
But I have to say, not only am I not an expert, but I've had trouble finding accurate/reliable sources of hop growing information. Freshops.com and morebeer.com have references, and there's a ton of other internet stuff. None of which seems to be heavily researched. A good hop/beer blog is
http://www.chillindamos.com.
I have the books "Homebrewer's Garden" and "The Complete Guide to Growing Your Own Hops, Malts, and Brewing Herbs" but would not recommend them. Barely any information on hops and tons on herbs and random recipes.
In any case, best wishes and cheers!
Jeb
