So I was one of the shmucks who bought a pound of Palisades hops in the MoreBeer! deal of the day.
I got them because it was a good deal. Also, because of the article on Mr. Malty.com where Matt from Firestone Walker liked using them for the late hop additions.
Has anyone used Palisades before? What can you tell me about them?
I'm going to use them in a double IPA I think, plus a few other beers in the future.

I used to use these a lot a while back. The shop I went to had a hard time getting a hold of many (most) varieties of hops for a while, and so we were 'stuck' with using palisades in all of our american styles and mount hoods in place of the noble hops, etc. etc... I have to admit though that during this time in my evolution as a brewer I was a college student doing extract batches every once in a while, I didn't take notes and in a lot of ways I had no idea what I was doing. I will say that I was always really happy with the results that I got from the palisades, but it was also at the phase when i was just excited to be making beer. I think we used them to replace cascades if i remember correctly, we did a lot of IPA recipes with Palisades, Amarillo, and Nugget because those were the hops that we could find, and they all seemed to work well together.

I've found Palisade to have a somewhat similar flavor and aroma to Amarillo. I did use them years ago, but I primarily use Amarillo in places I may have used Palisade in the past. I find Amarillo to be pretty bright and lively.

I used two ounces to dry hop an IPA last year. I thought it came out very good. Like other folks, I bought them as a substitute for hops that were out of stock. I would use them again, no problem.

I bought a pound from B3 too. I had used them before and wanted more. They are derived from Swiss Tettnanger. It's grassy, piney and apricot like. I really like them in my porter. I'm still playing around with them. It's the bittering hop in Bud American ale.

Now I'm confused. Amarillo has a distinct, if not overpowering grapefruit flavor. How can Palisade be similar if it's grassy piney, and apricot?

I'm drinking my porter now and I can't taste any grapefruit.

This is the best article with them I've read yet. I should try them in a simple APA. I think using it as the only hop in a IPA may be a bit much.

As for my own tastes I get earthy with a almost metallic-like lingering. I think it complements dark malts well.
