Anybody had any luck growing from seed? I found a place selling hop seeds and I'm pretty interested, but I've only heard about people growing from rhizomes.

Never heard of anyone that has tried to plant seeds. I am curious too!

I haven't priced anywhere else, but I stumbeled across these guys the other day. They don't mention exactly which subspecies either.
Looks like 30 seeds for $4.75

Although I haven’t grown either (I will this spring), the issue with seeds is that they are not a perfect clone of the parent plant. They are a mix of two plants genetic strains. Therefore, the hops grown from seed may not be what you were expecting (in flavor, composition, or performance.) This can be problematic for the commercial grower who needs to know exactly what they are going to get before planting acres of hops but may be of little consequence to the home brewer. (IMHO)

Rhizomes will take-off much faster than seeds because they have such a head-start. This is also an advantage if you have a brown thumb. I’m going with rhizomes for the sake of convenience.

A bigger problem with seeds is that you don't know the sex of the plants you get until it is too late. The male plants won't produce the cones you need. With the rhizomes you know you always get a female plant.
