Growing Hops

Mon Mar 19, 2007 12:26 pm

Hey,

I was thinking about growing some hops this summer. I am in Ontario and was wondering if there is a specific type of hop that would be recomended for this location. I was thinking cascade so I could use them as flavour/aroma hops.

Also, do they need direct sunlight, or would it work to grow them in the forest? I do'nt want to take over my mom's gardens ;-)

ok... does anyone have pics of full grow hops in a nice decorative arrangement? I'm looking for a way to convince my mom to let me put them on the property..

ok, I've got parental support... now the question is which types to get...

from what I've read, it is best to go for flavouring/aroma hops only and not bittering because it is difficult/imposible to calculate the AA percent of homegrown hops. If this is true... I was thinking Cascade for sure... but I'm not sure about the rest. (I was gonna go with 2-4 rhizomes)

Any suggestions?

Grow what you use the most as far as alphas trust your taste buds. Make a hop tea with a commercial hop of known alpha and your home grown if they are close uses that for hop calculations if not estimate the difference.

This is written for Virginia not the Great White North, but the information probably will apply during the growing season. I haven't done it, but these guys have.
