Crushing Grains

Fri Sep 07, 2007 11:07 am

My order from B3 just came in, and I forgot to have them crush my grains... there's only 6 pounds, so what can I do? is there an easy fix for this?

Easy way is find a buddy with a mill and borrow his.

Not so easy ways are using a blender (but just a little bit! Don't crush it to dust!) or a heavy duty piece of plastic and a rolling pin.

6# will suck with either of those ways though. I'd seriously be tempted to put the uncrushed grain aside for that day in the future when you have your own mill and order some more.

Bro do me a favor and double check the grain. The first time I ordered a kit from B3 I had the same issue. I called them and they said to check again. I did so and found out that they actually were ground. They just crack the grain and when you are used to grinding the shit out of it it it's easy to miss.

6 lbs is a lot to do this way but I have bagged about a pound in a large ziplock bag and used the end of a wooden bat to crush it. Only did that a couple times before I got a mill. I tried the roller pin idea but I started bending the handles so I went back to the wooden bat. Good luck.

I just brewed a small 1 gallon batch, and had about a half pound to ground, and I used a 1 litre nalgene waterbottle and the drip tray from my mini fridge to crush them,...
I thin it worked ;-)
