Old Starter ?

Sun Feb 04, 2007 8:14 am

Exactly two weeks ago I had one of those brewing sessions from hell that we all have experienced. Make a long story short the day ended with me dumping 5 gallons of wort down the drain and tossing my keg kettle across the yard with a bunch of #$*($*# *#@#**$# flying through the air. Of course after a beer and few minutes to cool down I collected my stuff and clean everything up. So now I have a starter sitting in a growler that I haven't done anything with. The growler has been in the basement where the temp has been lower than 60 the whole time. Can I pour off the liquid and pitch a new starter on the it and then use it for a brew session next weekend?

I reckon.... put it in the fridge for a day or so, pour off the liquid and give it a taste. If there is nothing nasty going on there, put in some new wort and see if it wakes up.

Have a packet or 2 of dried yeast on hand in case it all turns to crap.

I wanna hear why you dumped 5 gal of wort and threw the kettle...

Missed the og .30 then while using my pump for the first time I had the hose pop off twice and had wort all over the basement floor. Plus I was starting to get what turned out to be the flu. Just wasn't in a brewing state of mind that day.

Sounds like a good time to just start over from scratch rather than try to save it.

The starter should be fine. Just stick it in the fridge until the day before your next brew day. Then decant it and add some fresh starter wort.
