BLUE SPRUCE TIPS adding BU's?

Thu Oct 18, 2012 2:17 pm

So I'm working on a new version of my Blue Spruce APA. I've used spruce several times before but was wondering if it adds any calculable BU's.
I find that it adds a light bitterness along with the citrus/ light mint notes. wondering if i should leave make room in my hop schedule for any added BU's as I typically do not.

It won't add IBUs as such, but may contribute to the bitterness complexity of the beer. I'd probably shoot a bit lower than you normally would for a given recipe to let the spruce character come through a bit more..

im going fairly aggressive with hops as i find it compliments the spruce. But the last time i brewed this the oak was way too strong and took a while to settle out, and by the time it did the hops had done the same (i dry hopped w/ an ounce of amarillo and used cascades in place of the centennial.)
