Re: Dry hopping with Northern Brewer?

Tasting notes to date:

I dry hopped one keg with 1oz Cascade and 1oz NorthernBrewer. Definitely agree with the woody character. Like the flavor of tree bark (and we all know what tree bark tastes like, right kids?). I did not much care for it, and will probably enter the other version to NHC. I did leave the dry hops in the keg for about a week, so maybe too long, but I thought I would need to go that long, because the keg was kept cold.

My impression, skip Northern Brewer as a dry hop. These "woody" characters do not appear from the other version, which had Northern Brewer at a 5 minute addition.

After time has passed, the woody character has dissipated. What is left is the northern brewer flavors, including pine, mint, wood, earth, and maybe a little lemon, although that might be coming from other hop additions. I still don't like it much. It would probably server better as a background hop, rather than a forefront flavor. It must have been the Nugget I liked so much in the Obsidian Stout clone, not the Northern Brewer. I would not recommend this hop being used as a major player in the hop character / late hopping additions, although I would not rule it out completely, as it is very interesting and provides a lot of character.

I brew an amber with a northern brewer / amarillo dry hop. Can't get enough of it. I use some Victory 5% and a bit of chocolate 3% in the malt bill. The nutty flavors from the Victory/chocolate malt go well with the earthiness from the NB. The amarillo? Well as far as I'm concerned, everything goes well with amarillo!
