Pale Ale using Vienna Malt

Mon Oct 18, 2010 10:46 am

Hey all you grain experts,

Looking to create a basic Pale Ale incorporating Vienna malt to creat a copper to amber wort.
I done all 2 row and all Maris Otter Pales and am just looking to try a few other base malts that are out there. I was thinking of:

5 lb 2 Row
5 lb. Vienna
.75b. Simpsons Caramalt 30-37

Any thoughs?
Cheers.

Sounds good, go for it! What about using some German hops like Perle to stick with the German malt theme? But in the template of an APA. Could be interesting.

I made an awesome alt beer a couple years ago using Vienna as my base malt. You might want to try that.

My current favorite APA recipe uses some Vienna:

8.5 lbs Domestic 2-row
1 lb Vienna
1 lb Carastan (35 L)
0.5 lb Munich
0.5 lb Wheat

Add your favorite hops (I like equal parts Cascade and Centennial at 10, 0, and dry hopped) and a clean ale yeast.

I use a lit of Vienna, Carapils, Munich, Caravienne along with oats and wheat in my beers. My base malt of preference is Maris Otter. I prefer ales.

Hops I like to use with them include Centennial, Tetnag', Styrian Golding, Cascade, Northern Brewer, Pearl, Sazz.
HEY~!! It's a hobby~!! It's NOT supposed to make sense~!!

too late, wussed out and went 50-50 just to test the waters.
The sample tastes pretty good and will probably do a 100% version soon.
Good to see your avatar popping up again.
