Storing Hops

Short question: Store hop pellets in the fridge or freezer?

Long question: I heard from an episode of the Session with HopUnion that you should keep hops in the fridge. I've heard from other sources that the freezer will make them last longer. Either way i keep them in a ziplock bag that i suck the air out of with a straw and in the same bag they came from the grower in. Which is better?

Definately freezer. And remember ziploc bags are oxygen permiable. If you are storing for long periods, you may want to think about getting a vacuum sealer so that you can reseal the bag the hops come in. Storing for just a few weeks, ziploc is fine.

Freeze them if you got the space. I just wrap mine tight in the foil bags they came in and put them back in the freezer. I have '06 hops that are still good. :bnarmy:

Freezer. I have a heavy duty vacuume sealer that I use to store venison and elk portions (hunting season). I normally purchase my hops in bulk from Puterbaugh Farms (sp?) and divide the 1 lb leaf/pellets into 2-4 oz packages. I use the clear vacuume seal bags and they work great. I purchased my sealer at Cabellas. They often have them on sale so watch their website. Montanaandy

I agree with the freezer and vacuum sealer. I still need to get the sealer.
