Recipes that use SAAZ hops

Tue Jul 04, 2006 3:02 am

Hi guys,

A friend of mine recently gave me a whole bunch of nice fresh Saaz hop pellets. I was wondering if anyone could give me a few suggestions about recipes that would work well using this type of hop.

I know that the obvious answer is a Czech Pilsner, but I dont have the equipment to do lagers.

What else can I use these puppies in? I have heaps of them and I dont want them to go to waste and just get old and nasty.

I thought that they might work reasonably well in a Hefe, a little bit of pepper and spice to go with the cloves and bannanas doesn't sound bad. Or a maybe just brew some pale ale type thingies using saaz at all stages?

Any and all ideas would be appreciated

there is a document either on freshops or hopunion website that lists all the hops and the appropriate styles, as well as substitution variatels.

I use them in cream ales a lot. I also used them in my latest saison.

I brewed a beer with lager type ingredients, including all Saaz (they smell so awesome) and just used some ale yeast to ferment. Came out a bit dark, but I really enjoyed the beer a lot. So much, a second batch is on the way. Perhaps you can try it too.

Cheers,

Thanks guys,

I'm actually gonna give a czech pils a go, its cold enough here at teh moment to do a decent lager temp primary, and I will just have to see how we go with trying to lager the stuff. Probably I'll just keg it and let it sit in the fridge till I cant wait any more.... 2 days tops. It wont be an ideal lager, but it will probably still be nice. Brew day tomorrow and all the grain is bought and crushed, so I'll soon find out.

After that, a Hefe, then maybe a saison and I've never had a cream ale, so that seems like a damn good excuse to give one a try.

mmmmmmm Saaz
