Auctions are good too. Last summer I picked up 4-5gal carboys for $3 each. Between two auctions I could have picked up over thirty carboys for that price. Throw in a still-new-in-the-box Sanyo fridge for $30, a $1 still-new-in-the-box corona mill, and some nice Bohemia Chech glassware for less than $1 a glass, didn't do to badly last summer.

Plus you can always get a fridge or deep freeze for $10 or less.

They normally aren't brewing only auctions. You just have to go to lots of sales to find the occasional brewing item. At one I bought a corona mill for $15, at another a ball lock keg for $1, another had a 5# CO2 bottle and regulator for $15, and even another where I got a 5 gallon carboy along with an assortment of caps, stoppers, airlocks and a winged capper for $10. This was all over a period of 3 years and probably 100+ yard sales.

You just have to be patient and sort through all the junk.

Like what Wayne said. My parents auction a lot so I have access to lots of sale bills, which helps narrow sales down but you still don't know everything that will be at each sale. Plus if you talk to the auctioneers and let them know what things you are looking for, they will let you know about specific items in up coming sales. One sale I found out from an auctioneer was for a home winemaker. Had lots of gear but the only thing I needed was the Sanyo fridge and carboys. You can find old kegs a lot too.

Hit some rural small town auctions and occasionally you will find various (but complete) parts to stills also
